ArcGis is a software that is used to do the interpenetration of GIS information that can be downloaded from Digimaps.
The ArcGis software package includes various kits of software, each one directed to a different function. ArcScene for 3d Models and perspectives, ArcMaps for plans and ArcCatalog for the management of the folder that we are working on.
We start with a example of ArcScene existing in the system and we turn off all the layer to expose the topography of the site.
On the layer properties Vertical exaggeration can be used to exaggerate topography, buildings heights and any other layer with Z values
We can also select information by attribute or location. In this case we select all the buildings by making use of the selection by attribute. The information is copied to a new created layer and the color adjusted to match what we want.
We then, with the selection by attribute, extract to a new layer the foreshore of the Thames at present conditions. With the activation of the historic maps and the use of effects under the toolbar menu, is possible to make an on screen comparison of the historic and actual shoreline.
It is also possible to create layouts and print/export from ArcGis. Under the drop menu Insert we can add to our layout various viewports at different scale, attach scale and key to the different layouts.
On the viewport layers options is possible to merge information into a a more general characteristic (for example all green and other public spaces into public spaces , all buildings layers into a bigger buildings layer, etc)
And color can be very quickly adjusted by modifying the attributes of grouped layers.
Very useful in the creation of diagrams.
The data can be downloaded from Digimap and managed in ArcCatalog and brought into, both the ArcScene and ArcMaps.
The key files to download are OSTerrain 5DTM (ASC format), OS Terrain 5 Contours (shape format), MasterMap (TIFF format), Greenspace (shape format), Buildings heights (File geodatabase format) and Topography (File geodatabase format).
